Most of the duties of a dermatology technician are same as of a nurse which include interaction with patients, perform basic routine tests like taking blood or skin samples. Though overall treatment is top priority, but a dermatology technologist’s main goal is to prepare the patients for dermatologist examination.
As a dermatology technologist they should be proficient in performing basic lab and screening procedures. They should have experience and knowledge of preparing patients for diagnosis and assisting the dermatologists with their examinations. Under this they have to obtain vital signs and record them well.
Their duties and responsibilities also include technology assistance, follow-up with patients, dermatology procedures, and post operation care, fixing the schedules, dealing with instruments and ordering of materials. A dermatology technologist has to assist the dermatologist in testing procedures and patient care that covers all demanded testing of patient and documentation of the test reports in a clear and brief way. They also need to fix follow-up appointments either personally or on phone. They serve as the communication link between the patients and the doctors. A dermatology technologist candidate must have completed at least one year in Dermatology clinic or practice. Competent candidates should have experience with prescriptions, vital sign assessment, pre and post-op nursing and ability to assist in minor surgeries.
A dermatology technologist candidate must have minimum two years of job experience in cosmetic surgery or dermatology. He should have ability to offer high level customer care. A candidate with experience in medical setting and nursing certificate or license will be given more preference. Experience as a medical technologist will be fine, but experience as a dermatology technologist will be best.
